Bot Settings: Controlling What Your Bot Accepts
Bot Settings decides who your bot will accept things from in Second Life: inventory, group invites, friend requests, teleports, animation requests and experience permissions. Getting these right is the difference between a bot that quietly does its job and one that ends up in twenty groups it never asked to join.
Opening It
- Visit your LifeBots Dashboard at https://lifebots.cloud/dashboard
- Click My Bots, then choose your bot to open the Manage Bot page
- Click Bot Settings
The panel is headed Bot Acceptance Settings.
The Three Choices
Every setting offers the same three options:
| Option | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Owner Only | The bot will only accept from the bot owner. |
| Owner and Sub Accounts with Bot Control | The bot will accept from the owner and authorised sub accounts. |
| Everyone | The bot will accept from anyone in Second Life. |
The Six Settings
| Setting | Controls | Sensible Default |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory | Who the bot accepts inventory from | Owner Only |
| Group Invites | Who the bot accepts group invites from | Owner Only |
| Friend Requests | Who the bot accepts friend requests from | Depends on the job |
| Teleports | Who the bot accepts teleport offers from | Owner Only |
| Animation requests | Who the bot accepts animation permission requests from | Owner Only |
| Experience Requests | Who the bot accepts experience permission requests from | Owner Only |
[NOTE:] Changes take effect immediately for online bots. You do not need to restart the bot or log it out.
What Each One Actually Affects
Inventory
Whether the bot takes items people offer it. Set to Everyone and anyone can fill the bot’s inventory with whatever they like, including items you would rather not be carrying.
[IMPORTANT:] Leave this on Owner Only unless you have a specific reason. The exception is a bot running Live Support Tickets with Notecard Drop enabled, where customers must be able to hand the bot a notecard. If you enable that channel, this setting has to allow it.
Teleports
Whether the bot accepts teleport offers. On Everyone, anyone can pull your bot out of position, which breaks greeters, vendors and anything else that depends on the bot staying put.
[NOTE:] If your bot keeps ending up somewhere unexpected, this is the first setting to check. See How to Setup Login Base Location and Sit Object for pinning it in place.
Group Invites
Whether the bot joins groups it is invited to. Second Life caps how many groups an avatar can belong to, so an open setting lets strangers use up your bot’s group slots.
Leave it on Owner Only and invite the bot to groups yourself.
Friend Requests
This one genuinely depends on the job. Some add-ons offer to send a friend request as part of a rule, and being friends can help with online status and offline messaging. If your bot exists to interact with customers, Everyone may be right. If it is a private utility bot, Owner Only.
Animation and Experience Requests
These grant scripts control over the bot: animation permissions let a script animate it, and experience permissions can allow far more, including moving and attaching to it.
[IMPORTANT:] Be conservative with Experience Requests. Accepting an experience gives its scripts standing permissions over your bot within that experience. Only widen this if you know exactly which experience needs it and why.
A Sensible Starting Point
For most bots, start with everything on Owner Only and open up individual settings when something you actually want stops working. It is far easier to loosen one setting than to work out which of six is letting strangers interfere with your bot.
If you have staff managing the bot, Owner and Sub Accounts with Bot Control is usually the right middle ground.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Bot keeps getting moved | Teleports is probably set to Everyone. |
| Bot joined groups you did not add | Group Invites is set too widely. |
| Bot’s inventory is filling with junk | Inventory is set to Everyone. |
| Customers cannot hand the bot a notecard | Inventory is too restrictive for the Live Support notecard drop channel. |
| A staff member’s offers are refused | Use Owner and Sub Accounts with Bot Control, and confirm they have bot control permission. |
| Bot will not animate in a venue | Animation requests is set to Owner Only. |
| Changes do not seem to apply | They take effect immediately for online bots. If nothing changed, confirm the save succeeded. |
